About Sekem

Sekem is called “the miracle of the desert” Since the beginning in 1977 Sekem has transformed
more than 2.500 hectares of desert land into fertile soil according to the methods of Biodynamic farming. The sustainable development initiative that was started by Ibrahim Abouleish is unique and gives today a work- and life perspective to more than 20.000 Egyptian people. In the past 45 years Sekem inspired many people from all over the world to work for an ecological- and social restoration in a peaceful way. Nobody believed that it was possible to make the desert bloom on such a large scale. Ibrahim, his family, friends and co workers proved the contrary. Sekem also built a kindergarten, schools, a vocational training center, production companies for all kinds of food- and medicinal products, a biodynamic textile company, a medical center and last but not least the Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development in Cairo.
